Not really a resolution

In December Bill & I started kicking around taking the famed San Juan Huts ride 215 miles from Telluride, CO to Moab, UT this summer. We want to take as many adventure vacations as possible before kids, not that we won't take creative family vacations, but they'll need to walk and talk first. We both enjoy biking, but I've never been mountain biking and have never trained or established a good exercise routine. But I was pretty serious about seeing those mountains from a bike. For Xmas my mom gave us all "theme" bags with gifts around a subject of interest. Adon got motorcycle tools, Trevor bartending supplies and Bill bicycle gadgets. I got a "Moriah's never been so fat in her life" theme bag. MP3 player, low-fat Greek and Indian cookbooks and clothes a size too big. Well, they fit me now but wouldn't have a couple years ago. I took it all with great humor. If you can't laugh about aging and getting out of shape, how are you going to get the energy to turn it around? But really, I laugh about everything as my friends and family know.

So I had a membership at my office gym that I hardly ever used and access to a personal trainer. I also had budgeted for and scheduled some chiropractic treatments to begin in January having finally grown tired of the pain and discomfort I'd learned to live with. I had the knowledge and tools to eat healthier. And really I didn't have such terrible eating habits, but there's always room for improvement. It happened to fall with the new year, but it wasn't a resolution. Which is probably why I'm still going to the gym 5 days a week, sticking with the trainer, having daily fruit smoothies and looking for fun ways to exercise like belly dancing. I just started a class last week and am looking forward to learning new techniques.

In the past I'd had fits and starts of working out and developing healthier habits. But I didn't have a tangible goal like this summer's vacation, so I bored of it and felt it was a chore. This time around, I feel great. I'm seeing progress. I'm having fun. And I can clearly envision me pumping my quads as I incline to some incredible views of the Rockies.
